Forensic Pathologist
Chief Forensic Pathologist - The
Marin County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking applicants
for the position of Chief Forensic Pathologist. The position will
become available January 3, 2011 when the operations of the
Coroner’s Office are consolidated into the Sheriff’s Office. The
Chief Forensic Pathologist position is an independent contract
position.
Marin County, the gateway to the “North Bay,” is located just to the
north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge covering
approximately 820 square miles with a population of over 258,000
residents. As a host of many cultural events, the County of Marin
offers numerous fine hotels, dining establishments, golf courses and
outdoor activities. In addition to popularity as a vacation spot,
the County of Marin offers both family and retirement style living.
Each year there are approximately 1,800 deaths in the County. The
Coroner’s Office conducts an average of 225-250 autopsies, 400
investigations without autopsy, and 390 physician referrals.
Pathologist responsibilities include performing medico legal
examinations including autopsies and external examinations,
providing cause and manner of death of those deaths coming under the
jurisdiction of the Coroner, and preparing detailed autopsy and
external examination reports.
The pathologist must have skills necessary to consult with
attorneys, physicians, and law enforcement, as well as, be able to
respond to death scenes when requested. The pathologist will provide
expert testimony before the Grand Jury and in criminal or civil
proceedings regarding cases performed while employed as the Marin
County Sheriff’s Office pathologist when required. The pathologist
may also be asked to conduct or participate in in-service training
for law enforcement and associated agencies as needed as well as
consult from a pathology perspective on emergency response and
pandemic issues and assist as a liaison with organ and tissues
procurement organizations.
To be considered for employment, the applicant must be board
certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology
and must have successfully completed a forensic pathology fellowship
program.
Salary: $248,000

Forensic Pathologist - The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner is
seeking applicants for the position of Forensic Pathologist. The
Coroner Bureau operates out of two facilities in southern
California, in the cities of Perris and Indio. The population of
Riverside County is over 2 million.
The management team is looking for a qualified pathologist to join
the forensic division that currently includes the chief forensic
pathologist and three county based pathologists. In 2009,
approximately 1300 forensic autopsies were performed by the Coroner
Bureau in addition to external examination “consultations.”
Ancillary support is provided by an on site anthropologist, and
contract odontologist and neuropathologist.
To be considered for employment, the applicant must be board
eligible or board certified by the American Board of Pathology in
anatomic pathology and must have successfully completed a forensic
pathology fellowship program. To maintain employment, it is expected
that the pathologist obtain board certification by the American
Board of Pathology in forensic pathology within the eligibility
period.
The main office in Perris is located 60 miles east of Los Angeles,
45 miles northeast of the beach cities of neighboring Orange County,
and 90 miles north of San Diego. The western end of Riverside County
is home to the city and county seat of Riverside and to the Temecula
Valley wineries, festivals and the Pechanga casino. The Desert
Forensic Center in Indio serves the eastern portion of Riverside
County, covering approximately 30% of the forensic death
investigations in Riverside County. The Coachella Valley’s desert
cities are the host of many athletic and cultural events, and they
offer many fine resort hotels, dining establishments, casinos, golf
courses and outdoor activities. In addition to popularity as a
vacation spot, the Coachella Valley offers both family and
retirement style living.
Riverside County offers an attractive benefit package. Salary is
commensurate with qualification and experience as follows:
Forensic Pathologist III: $162,860 - $171,788 (Possession of
a valid Physician\'s and Surgeon\'s Certificate issued by the State
of California and eligible for Certification in Forensic Pathology
by the American Board of Pathology)
Forensic Pathologist IV: $171,772 - $181,189 (Possession of a
valid Physician\'s and Surgeon\'s Certificate issued by the State of
California. Possession of Certification in Forensic Pathology by the
American Board of Pathology)

Forensic Pathologist

The Kern County Sheriff's Office Coroner Section is
seeking a full time Forensic Pathologist to join our current
staff of two full time Forensic Pathologists. The Coroner's
Facility is located at the Southern end of the San Joaquin
Valley approximately two hours drive north of Los Angeles in
beautiful Bakersfield California. Kern County is the third
largest geographical county in the state of California, covering
approximately 8,200 squares miles. Bakersfield has a population
of about 400,000 and is the county seat. The County of Kern has
a total population of approximately 750,000. In 2008, the
Sheriff's Coroner's Section had approximately 2077 reportable
cases and conducted approximately 800 examinations, including 63
homicides.
SALARY RANGE: $210,000-$253,000 yearly based on
experience and qualifications. The Forensic Pathologist position
is an independent contract position.

WORKLOAD: 250-350 cases per year plus administrative
duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Anatomic or Anatomic and Clinical
Certification from the American Board of Pathology, and Forensic
Pathology Certification or eligibility for certification is
required. Forensic Pathology Certification must be obtained
within three years from date of hire. Must have or be prepared
to obtain medical licensure in California and obtain a valid
California Driver License.
